iTM Mixer at Magic Island
During the weekend, Ilokano: The Movement celebrated it’s first event undertaking – a small mixer at Magic Island in the Ala Moana Beach Park.
It won’t be an event without some surprises along the way. If you’ve lived in Hawai’i, you’d know that rains, winds, and humidity is lurking right around the corner. Luckily for us that day, we had only encountered the first two. However strong they were throughout the day, it didn’t stop us from the celebration because we still had a very reasonable turnout.
On top of getting together for food, there were activities to teach us little things that make up an Ilokano. We had a competition to see who could build the best burnay, or clay pot, out of molding dough. There were some creative designs, but in the end, the winner was Debbie M.. She received a hydro flask care of Rowena M. We also brought a board to write on, putting words both in English and in Ilokano, to express how we feel about ourselves in connection with the culture, and what it means to promote it.
A party is simply not a party without the inclusion of a cake! Our new logo was featured on the cake, and it looked amazingly delicious. Thank you again to Rowena for providing this for us.
Organizers and contributors of this event were the entire iTM team, who worked to set up the tents, order food and bring the party along to celebrate. Thank you to all of those who were able to make it in addition to the team – Debbie, Krystle, Amanda, Tony, Renz, Julie and Jenny – we are truly thankful taking the time to attend and I hope you had fun!
